Mt. Yunam Peak Expedition (6,111M)

After an early breakfast, the journey begins with a scenic drive towards Keylong, passing through the remarkable Atal Tunnel, which offers breathtaking views of the Chandra Valley. As you cross into Lahaul, the landscape dramatically changes from lush greenery to rugged high-altitude terrain. The drive takes around 4-5 hours, allowing for short breaks to admire the surroundings. Upon reaching Keylong, you will check into a hotel and rest for the night, adjusting to the increasing altitude.

The journey continues with a drive from Keylong to Bharatpur, covering a distance of approximately 80 km. The route takes you through one of the most beautiful high-altitude landscapes, passing Deepak Tal and Suraj Tal, two stunning glacial lakes. You will also cross Baralacha La (4,890M), one of the highest motorable passes on this route. Upon reaching Bharatpur, a remote and picturesque campsite, tents will be set up for the night. Here, you will get the first real experience of high-altitude camping, preparing for the trek ahead.

This day is dedicated to acclimatization, a crucial step in preparing your body for the high-altitude ascent. A short hike to a higher altitude will be undertaken to help adjust to the thin air. This also provides an opportunity to admire the vast mountain landscapes and capture some stunning photographs. After spending time at an elevated point, you will return to Bharatpur for the night, ensuring a good rest before the trek to Base Camp.

The trek to Base Camp begins after breakfast, covering a moderate distance in about 3-4 hours. The trail involves crossing small glacial streams and navigating rocky moraine patches, making for an exciting and slightly technical hike. As you gain altitude, the surroundings become increasingly dramatic, with snow-capped peaks rising in the distance. Upon reaching Base Camp, the team will set up tents, and you will settle in for the night. The evening will be spent resting, hydrating, and preparing for the upcoming summit attempt.

This day is dedicated to acclimatization and training, ensuring that all participants are fully prepared for the summit push. The team will conduct a technical training session covering essential mountaineering skills such as handling ice axes, using crampons, rope techniques, and safety measures for high-altitude climbing. A short acclimatization hike will further help in adjusting to the altitude. The evening will include a detailed briefing on the summit attempt, including weather conditions and the route plan. Rest and hydration are prioritized to ensure peak physical condition for the next day’s challenging climb.

The most challenging and rewarding day of the expedition begins early, usually around 1:00 AM, to ensure the best weather conditions for the summit attempt. Equipped with headlamps, warm gear, and technical equipment, the team will ascend via the South Ridge, navigating through sections of rock, scree, and snow. The climb is demanding, requiring endurance and mental resilience, taking anywhere between 8-11 hours to complete.

Reaching the summit of Mount Yunam is a moment of triumph, offering breathtaking 360-degree views of the Chandra Bhaga Range, Mulkilla Range, Lahaul Valley, and Zanskar Range. After soaking in the achievement and capturing unforgettable photographs, the descent back to Base Camp begins. Upon arrival, you will rest and celebrate the successful climb with the team.

Weather conditions in the mountains can be unpredictable, and this extra day is reserved in case of delays due to bad weather. If the summit attempt was completed as scheduled, this day can be used to rest, explore the surroundings, or simply enjoy the high-altitude environment.

The expedition concludes with a trek back to Bharatpur, retracing the journey through the rugged terrain. From Bharatpur, vehicles will be arranged for the return drive to Manali. The route once again offers mesmerizing views of the Lahaul Valley, glacial rivers, and mountain passes. Upon reaching Manali, you will be dropped at the bus station, marking the end of an unforgettable adventure. The expedition will conclude with cherished memories of the Himalayan experience.
